Why does your real hourly wage matter?

Your invoice rate isn't your real wage. Count the unpaid hours, the quoting, and the chasing for payment, and the number you're actually earning per hour can drop hard. This tool finds that real number.

Charge $50 an hour, but only half your week is billable, 20 out of 40 hours. The other 20 go to admin and chasing work. Revenue for the week comes to $1,000. Spread across the full 40 hours you actually worked, that's $25 an hour, half what your invoice says.

Common Questions

How do I calculate my real hourly wage?

Subtract work-related expenses from your annual pay, then divide by every hour connected to the job. Paid time, commuting, unpaid preparation, and any required after-hours work. The formula is: real hourly wage = adjusted annual income ÷ total job-related hours. The result is a more accurate picture of what you actually earn per hour, once hidden time and costs are included.

Should commute time count as work time?

Yes. Commuting is time you wouldn't spend if you didn't have the job, so it belongs in the total hours you divide your income by. Leaving it out makes your hourly wage look higher than it really is.

Should I subtract work expenses from my salary?

Yes, if those expenses only exist because of the job. Fuel, parking, uniforms, tools, or software you paid for yourself. Subtracting them before dividing by hours gives a truer figure than looking at gross salary alone.

Why is my real hourly wage lower than my contracted rate?

Contracted rates only count paid hours. Real hourly wage counts every hour the job costs you, including commuting and unpaid extra work. Adding those hours to the calculation, without adding more pay, naturally lowers the per-hour figure.

How can I use real hourly wage to compare jobs?

Two jobs with the same salary can pay very differently per hour once commute time, unpaid overtime, and expenses are factored in. Calculating the real hourly wage for each job gives you a fair, apples-to-apples comparison beyond the headline salary number.
